When is the best time to visit Sumatra for trekking?
The best time to trek in North Sumatra Jungle, is between February to September, outside of the rainy season.

How difficult are the jungle treks in Bukit Lawang?
Between February to September, it is not difficult to explore the jungle, as the land is more dry. In the summer months, Bukit Lawang can see temperatures up to 35 degrees celcius, while the winter months reach about 25 degrees celcius. During the rainy season, the jungle can become a bit more difficult to explore, as the land becomes more slippery.

Do I need a guide for jungle trekking?
Yes, since the Jungle in Bukit Lawang is a National Park, it is obligatory to enter it alongside a guide who will purchase the permit. The permits to enter the jungle are included in our trekking experiences.

Will I see orangutans?
The chances of seeing Orangutangs is extremely high, as your guide will do everything possible to ensure this experience.

What should I wear to go jungle trekking?
You should wear a T-shirt and mountain shoes, rubber shoes or sports shoes, and loose pants to trek in the jungle. Beware that you may encounter different weather depending on the season you arrive. It is also possible to encounter leeches, spiders and mosquitos, so please bring bug repellant if you prefer avoiding bites.

What's included in the jungle trekking experience?
Three meals a day with optional fruit snacks will be provided. Bedding and campsite material will also be included with trekking of minimum one night. A permit per day is also included in your purchase.

What should I bring with me?
During your trekking experience, you may want to bring water, bug spry, tooth brush and tooth paste, a towel and a bathing suite for optional swims, and a sufficient change of clothes.

What other wildlife can i see during my Bukit Lawang trekking experience?
We cannot ensure that you will see all possible wildlife that the UNESCO National Park of Gunung Leuser can offer, but booking a 7-10 day trekking experience increases your chances of seeing wildlife such as Asian Elephants, tigers, deers, hornbills, multiple different species of monkeys, and night crawlers.

Travelling from the Airport
Public buses from Kualanamu Airport to Bukit Lawang take 4-5 hours, and are under €5.
Semi-private buses take 3-4 hours, and are about €12-20. Order a private car for €42, and arrive in 2-3 hours!

Sumatra No-no's
Please do not feed the wildlife.. Beware of monkeys as some can get aggressive when hungry, with many carrying diseases like rabies. If you happen to cross a monkey, please keep your keys or cell phone in your pocket and avoid making eye contact. Although not necessary, it's customary to dress modestly, covering shoulders, chest and knees.
Buying Food
The central local market is open every day from 5am-5pm for fruits and vegetables. Purchase meat like chicken or beef from 5am-7am daily, or all day Friday.
The only two other stores in the area are Alfamart and Indomart, both located on the main road of Bukit Lawang.
